About Duncan

I’m Duncan Wood, a Scottish landscape photographer based in Angus. I work slowly, return to places, and teach the same way. Quietly, thoughtfully, and at your pace.

If you’re looking for someone who rushes from landmark to landmark, jostling for tripod space at the usual popular spots, that’s not really me. I prefer to stay put. I’ll revisit the same glen, wood, or stretch of coast across seasons, letting the weather do what it does best until something honest shows itself.

Photography is how I connect with Scotland’s wild places. Not just what they look like, but how they feel to stand in them.

I’ve loved photography since I was a wee lad. I even built my first camera out of Lego. It did absolutely nothing, of course, but it sparked a lifelong fascination with photography.

I’m a self-confessed camera geek and an introvert at heart, always need to be learning, happiest wandering through misty woodland or watching the tide rewrite the coast.

A Slower Way of Seeing

My work is rooted in what I’d call slow photography. Long-term observation, patience, and finding the extraordinary in overlooked places.

I’m drawn to nooks and crannies, the in-between moments, and the bits most folk walk past. In an age where images can be generated in seconds, I’m drawn even more to the real thing. Being there. Waiting. Responding.

I want the photographs to come from experience, not spectacle.

My Home Patch

Angus and Tayside are my backyard. I’ve spent years learning their rhythms. Woodland after rain, quiet glens, and the East Coast when the light turns and the sea starts behaving like a living thing.

That familiarity means I’m not chasing “the shot”. I’m working with what’s actually happening, in the moment, in places I know well enough to slow down inside.

I also run the Kirriemuir Photography Club, which I love. Good folk, good chat, and a shared appreciation for the landscape on our doorstep.

Workshops

If you are thinking about a workshop, my approach is the same as my photography. Calm, unhurried, and pressure free, whether you are a complete beginner or more advanced.

Workshops are available one to one or in small groups (up to three), so it stays personal.

I am your guide, not your instructor. I will help you move beyond Auto, simplify the settings, and enjoy the process.

Most sessions take place across Angus, the East Coast, Tayside, Perthshire, and Aberdeenshire.

I also run a small number of Signature workshops in carefully chosen locations around Scotland, with set dates and a slower, more immersive feel.

If you’re visiting Scotland, I can also shape a private photo tour around your time and interests.

Larger groups (four or more) can be arranged by enquiry.

Confused by settings? Start here.

If your camera feels like a clever wee machine you do not quite speak the language of yet, you are not alone.

Level 1 (Get Off Auto) is the simplest starting point.

Calm, practical, and built to make aperture, shutter speed, and ISO finally click.

You will leave with a clear foundation, a repeatable process, and the confidence to stop second guessing.

One to one or small groups (up to three), tailored to your pace.

Life Outside the Lens

When the camera’s tucked away, I’m usually being bossed about by my two Schnauzers, Maggie and Chief Brody. Brody’s named after Chief Brody from Jaws, which is still the best film ever made, and he carries that sort of confidence like he’s in charge of the whole coastline.

I like slow things. A quiet cycle route. A steady Munro day. A peaty whisky that takes its time. A bit of guitar when the house is calm.

I’m also a maker at heart. That’s probably why photography stuck. I like figuring things out, then going back out and trying again until it feels right..
