Learn Through Real Photography
You will not spend the day standing still working through camera menus. We use real locations and subjects to make aperture, shutter speed, ISO, focus and composition easier to understand.
Depending on the location and what interests you most, we might work with woodland, coast, waterfalls, lochs or wider landscapes.
The subject can change. The principles stay the same.

Led by Duncan Wood
This workshop is led personally by Duncan Wood, an award-winning Scottish landscape photographer based in Angus.
Duncan has worked with photographers at every stage, from complete beginners picking up their first camera to more experienced photographers refining their approach in the field.
The focus at Level 1 is simple: helping you understand your camera, make sense of the essentials and leave with a process you can keep using on your own.

Yes. You do not need any previous photography experience.
The workshop is designed for people using their first camera, returning to photography after time away, or anyone who has been taking photographs but still feels unsure about settings, exposure or composition.
We start with the essentials and build from there.

No. You do not need to understand Manual mode before the workshop.
We will look at aperture, shutter speed and ISO, how they work together, and how to choose suitable settings for what you are photographing. The aim is to understand your camera rather than simply memorise a particular mode.

The day can include woodland, coast and seascape, waterfalls, lochs, wider landscapes or a mixture of subjects, depending on the location and what interests you most.
The subject may change, but the same core skills in exposure, focus, composition and camera control apply throughout.

Send me your preferred dates and where you are travelling from or staying, and I can suggest availability and a suitable location.
Fixed-date workshops may also be available separately through the wider workshop programme.

Bring a camera that allows you to control settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO, along with a suitable lens, charged batteries and memory cards.
A tripod can be useful for subjects such as waterfalls and longer exposures, but you do not need to buy one specifically for the workshop. If you are unsure whether your camera or equipment is suitable, send me the model when you enquire.

Photography workshops do not depend on perfect weather, and changing conditions can often provide useful opportunities for learning.
The location or plan can be adjusted where appropriate. If conditions are unsafe or genuinely unsuitable for the planned workshop, we will discuss the best alternative.
