A Practical Approach
Learn Lightroom Through Your Own Images
I teach Lightroom around the photographs you actually make. Rather than following generic examples or copying a preset, we’ll work through your own images and look at the decisions that take them from RAW file to finished photograph.
Your Photographs
We work with images you know, so the session stays relevant to your photography, your subjects and the results you want to achieve.
The Reasoning Behind the Edit
I’ll explain what I’m changing and why, including the choices I would make differently depending on the image, light and mood.
A Workflow You Can Repeat
The aim is not to produce one finished image together. It is to give you a clearer editing process you can apply confidently to the rest of your work.
What We Can Work On
I’ll shape each session around where you are with Lightroom and the areas that will make the biggest difference to your photography.
Workflow & Organisation
I can help you simplify importing and organising, make stronger selections, understand the order of adjustments and build an editing process that feels clear and repeatable.
Tone, Colour & Masking
We can work through exposure, white balance, contrast, curves, colour control and Lightroom’s masking tools, with an emphasis on natural, believable editing.
Finishing & Consistency
We can refine cropping, sharpening, noise reduction and export, then look at consistency across a set while developing an approach that still feels like your photography.
From RAW to Finished
From RAW File to Finished Photograph
Editing is not about making every image dramatic. I’ll show you how I assess a RAW file, decide what it needs and build the edit in a logical order without losing what made the photograph work in the first place.
Start With the Photograph
We begin by looking at what already works in the image, what needs attention and what can be left alone.
Build the Edit Deliberately
I’ll show you how to work through tone, colour, local adjustments and finishing in an order that keeps the process clear.
Know When to Stop
Part of good editing is recognising when the photograph is finished rather than adding adjustments simply because Lightroom gives you the option.
How a Session Works
I keep the process simple so we can spend the session working on your photography rather than setting things up.
Send Me Your Images
Before the session, send me a small selection of photographs you would like to work on and let me know anything you particularly want help with.
We Edit Together
We meet on Zoom and share screens. I’ll demonstrate, explain the reasoning behind each decision and help you work through the same process yourself.
Apply It to Your Own Work
You leave with a clearer understanding of what to do, why you are doing it and a workflow you can continue using after the session.

Lightroom Tuition Reviews
Feedback from photographers I’ve worked with one-to-one on Lightroom, editing and workflow.
Duncan was very helpful in looking at my photography and editing workflows to give some pointers on how to improve both. It was useful to pick his brain and go through some examples together. The prep work that Duncan did for this meeting was excellent and lead to a very focused review together. It was great to pull from his experience to improve my skills.
Excellent session. Duncan was superb at simplifying my workflow issues and gave me a great framework to use. He immediately put me at ease and made me feel capable and in control rather than overwhelmed with folders and Lightroom filing, as I was when I arrived.
Lightroom Tuition FAQs
A few practical details about the sessions, software, booking and how the tuition works.
-
Both are fine. I can work with you in Lightroom Classic or the cloud-based version of Lightroom. If you are unsure which version you use, that is easily checked before the session.
-
Yes. Sessions are completely one-to-one, so we can start wherever you are. If you are new to Lightroom, we can build a clear foundation from the beginning. If you already have experience, we can focus on more advanced editing, masking, colour, workflow or any specific areas you want to improve.
-
Yes. In fact, that is how I prefer to teach. Before the session, you can send me a small selection of photographs you would like to work on. RAW files are ideal, although we can also work with JPEGs if that is what you have.
-
We meet on Zoom and use live screen sharing so we can work through Lightroom together. I can demonstrate an edit, explain why I am making each adjustment and then guide you through the process on your own photographs.
-
Yes. You do not need to use the full block at once. Your hours can be divided across multiple sessions, which gives you time to practise what we have covered and come back with new photographs, questions or areas you would like to explore.
-
After booking, I’ll email you within 24 hours to arrange a suitable date and time for your first session. If you would rather check availability before booking, you are welcome to get in touch first.
-
Absolutely. The tuition is online, so I regularly work around different time zones. We simply agree a session time that works for both of us.
-
Have Lightroom installed and ready to use, along with a selection of photographs you would like to work on. It is also useful to think about any particular problems, tools or parts of your workflow that you would like us to concentrate on.
