Woodland Photography in Glen Affric

Glen Affric is one of Scotland’s finest locations for woodland photography.

Home to ancient Caledonian pinewoods, old birch, lichen, moss, bracken and rich autumn colour, it offers far more than the wider views of loch and mountain. This is a landscape built for slower photography, where the strongest images are often found in the quieter details.

This Signature Workshop is designed for photographers who want to explore Glen Affric as a woodland photographer’s paradise, working with atmosphere, texture, colour, structure, intimate landscapes and the changing light of autumn.

A few years ago, I gave myself a challenge. Instead of spending a day or two rushing around a location, I would spend an entire week in one place.

I chose Glen Affric.

That week changed the way I photograph. It taught me to slow down, revisit locations, work with changing conditions, and look beyond the obvious views.

Many of the images created during those visits went on to receive national and international recognition, including work featured in Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year and Natural Landscape Photographer of the Year.

Today, Glen Affric remains one of the places I return to for inspiration, perspective, and a reset from everyday life. It is somewhere I know well, somewhere I care deeply about, and a landscape I am proud to share with others.

Saturday 10 October to Saturday 24 October 2026

Private one-to-one sessions or small groups

A Woodland-First Approach

Glen Affric is famous for Loch Affric, mountain views, and ancient woodland, but this workshop is built around the woodland first.

We will look for structure among the trees, separation in busy scenes, quieter details, natural layers, autumn colour, lichen, bark, bracken, reflections, and moments of atmosphere created by mist, rain, and soft light.

The aim is to move beyond simply recording the place and begin making images that feel more considered, personal, and connected to the woodland itself.

Slow Down. See More.

Woodland photography rewards patience.

Rather than rushing from place to place, we will spend time reading the landscape, watching how light moves through the trees, and finding order within the apparent chaos of the woodland.

I will help you simplify busy scenes, recognise stronger compositions, and make more confident decisions in the field.

Sometimes that may mean working with a wider view across loch and mountain. More often, it may mean slowing down with a single tree, a patch of colour, a quiet reflection, or a small detail hidden within the forest.

The aim is not simply to visit Glen Affric.

The aim is to see it more clearly.

Who This Workshop Is For

This workshop is for photographers who are drawn to woodland, atmosphere, autumn colour, and a slower way of working in the landscape.

You do not need to be advanced. What matters most is that you want to spend time with the landscape properly, look beyond the obvious views, and create photographs that feel more personal and considered.

It is especially suited to those who prefer a quieter, more personal experience, whether through a private one-to-one session or a small group.

Ideal for photographers who want to:

  • improve woodland and landscape photography

  • simplify complex natural scenes

  • work better with light, mist, colour, and changing conditions

  • find more intimate and abstract compositions

  • build confidence in the field

  • return home with images that feel more intentional

Limited Autumn Availability

Autumn in Glen Affric is brief, and the woodland colour window can pass quickly.

This workshop runs between 10 October and 24 October 2026, when the ancient woodland is usually at its most colourful and atmospheric.

To keep the experience personal, availability is limited to private one-to-one sessions and small groups.

Single-day bookings can be reserved directly, while multi-day workshops and bespoke group enquiries can be arranged separately.

Early booking is recommended, especially if you have specific dates in mind.

The Location

Glen Affric sits in the Scottish Highlands and is home to one of the largest surviving remnants of Scotland’s ancient Caledonian Forest.

For this workshop, the focus is the woodland itself: Scots pine, old birch, lichen, moss, bracken, quiet loch edges, autumn colour, and the atmosphere created by mist and changing light.

There are opportunities for wider Highland views, but the real strength of Glen Affric is the variety of woodland scenes, intimate landscapes, abstract details, texture, colour, and natural structure.

Getting Here & Where to Stay

If you are travelling from further afield, Inverness is the easiest hub to aim for, whether arriving by train or plane.

From there, Glen Affric is most comfortably reached by car, and I can advise on the simplest route once your dates are confirmed.

For accommodation, Cannich is the nearest and most convenient base for the workshop, placing you closest to the glen itself. Drumnadrochit is another good option if you would like a wider choice of accommodation, food, and services while still remaining within easy reach of the area.
