A Curated East Coast Photography Route

This is a location-led workshop built around selected coastal areas in Angus and Aberdeenshire, rather than a general coastal photography day.
The route is not fixed in advance. I choose the final locations around tide times, weather, light, safe access, your experience level and the kind of images you want to make.
Depending on conditions, the day can include dramatic cliffs, castles, beaches, sea stacks, lighthouses, rock formations, tide lines, long exposures, coastal abstracts and quieter shoreline details.

Angus Coast and Arbroath Cliffs
East Haven, Elliot Links, Arbroath Cliffs, Seaton Cliffs and Auchmithie offer a mix of beaches, red sandstone cliffs, rock formations, sea caves, tide lines and quieter shoreline details.

Lunan Bay, Montrose and Scurdie Ness
Lunan Bay, Red Castle, Montrose Beach, Montrose Basin, Scurdie Ness Lighthouse and Boddin Point can offer wide beaches, dunes, castle ruins, lighthouse views, mudflat patterns, birds, reflections and open coastal atmosphere.

St Cyrus and the Mearns Coast
St Cyrus, Inverbervie and the quieter Mearns coastline offer dunes, cliffs, beach patterns, grasses, river-mouth details, shingle, surf and more natural coastal compositions.

Dunnottar Castle and Fowlsheugh
Dunnottar Castle, Dunnottar Cliffs, Dunnottar Woods, Crawton Bay and Fowlsheugh can offer dramatic cliffs, castle views, seabirds, sea stacks, woodland shelter, storm light and stronger location-led compositions.

For anyone who wants to understand their camera, move away from Auto and build confidence in coastal and landscape settings.
We will keep the day calm and practical, covering exposure, focus, lenses, shutter speed and simple composition while working safely around the coast.

For photographers who know the basics but want stronger, more consistent coastal and landscape images.
We can work on composition, lens choice, filters, shutter speed, timing, light, tide awareness and how to make better decisions when conditions are changing.

Level 3 | Advanced
For experienced photographers who want deeper refinement, stronger creative choices and more personal East Coast images.
This level focuses on atmosphere, visual rhythm, restraint, field craft, mood, subtle compositions and developing a more intentional way of working around the coast.

Yes. Tide times can affect the best meeting time, route and location choices.
Some coastal areas are better, safer or more useful at certain tide stages, so the workshop timing may be planned around the tide as well as the light and weather.

Yes. An East Coast workshop can include cliffs, beaches, castles, lighthouses, long exposures, shoreline details, wildlife, woodland edges or wider landscape subjects.

Poor weather does not automatically mean poor photography. The East Coast can work well in soft light, cloud, mist, wind, rain, stormy conditions and changing weather.
If the weather becomes unsafe or completely unsuitable, we can discuss adjusting the location, route, timing or date.

A camera, charged batteries, memory cards and suitable outdoor clothing are the essentials.
A tripod is useful for many East Coast locations, especially for long exposures, low light, water movement and careful compositions. Filters can also be helpful, but I can advise you before the day based on your equipment and workshop plan.

Travel during the workshop day is included from our agreed meeting point when we are moving between locations together.
Depending on the route and format, we may meet directly at a coastal location or arrange a suitable meeting point and travel together from there.
