A BIT ABOUT ME

Since I can remember, I have been in love with photography. Now 42 years old, I am still fascinated and passionate about it. My Dad is a fantastic, naturally gifted photographer, and growing up, he would have his camera gear with him everywhere we went. Back then, he was shooting film and predominantly 35mm slides.

My sister and I regularly asked for a slide show; it was exciting, like our own cinema being set up in the living room with a big pull-down projector screen. Filling the cartage with slides and sitting back enjoying the show, some slides upside down, back to front, but it was precious family time, bringing us together through photography.

MY FIRST CAMERA

I was so keen to have my own camera, I made my first one with Lego when I was around 6 years old. It wasn’t long before I had my first ‘real’ camera at 7.

REALIZING YOUR POTENTIAL - LEARNING

Fast forward a couple of decades, a few more cameras, and many generations of camera phones. I realised how much photography meant to me and how big a part of my life it had been. It is a creative and emotional outlet for me, and I wanted to learn the art of photography to help with the expression of how I feel and see the world around us.

THE MUSIC OF PHOTOGRAHY

The camera is an instrument, the paper is a score sheet, and the image is the song.

I bought my first DSLR aged 30. I immersed myself in learning how to use it and became obsessed with the science of light, the theory behind composition. I spent countless hours reading, watching, practising, and consuming as much knowledge as possible. This has never ended. I am my own worse critic and am still striving to be better, and I feel I learn something from every outing with my camera. Still inspired by the great photographers of the past and present, from big names to local members of my photography club.
